Pattaya & Chonburi Travel Guide 2026: Ko Lan, Bang Saen, Sanctuary of Truth

Chonburi 2026 guide — Pattaya beach, Ko Lan island, Ko Sichang, Sanctuary of Truth, Nong Nooch Garden, Bang Saen. 2-day & 4-day itineraries · 30 stamp spots.

Stamps available in this province

Pattaya Beach Ko Lan Sanctuary of Truth Nong Nooch Tropical Garden Bang Saen Beach
Ko Lan (Coral Island) — the cleanest beach on the eastern Gulf, just off Pattaya
Ko Lan (Coral Island) — the cleanest beach on the eastern Gulf, just off Pattaya

Chonburi is two provinces in one — the Bang Saen / Sriracha / Ang Sila side caters to Thai families with budget-friendly seafood and quick weekend getaways from Bangkok · the Pattaya / Sattahip side runs on international tourism, Ko Lan beaches, and round-the-clock entertainment. The two coasts sit 30 km apart but feel like different countries.

The TripDeDee team makes the trip often — Nong Mon market for snacks, Bang Saen for sunset, Ko Lan for weekend swims. This guide picks 10 must-see spots from the 30 in the app + 2-day and 4-day itineraries + a nighttime section.

Quick Facts

  • Best season: November–April (dry, calm seas)
  • Daily budget: 30–75 USD/person (Pattaya ~30% more expensive than Bang Saen)
  • Recommended length: 1 day (Bang Saen only) · 2 days/1 night (Pattaya + Ko Lan) · 4 days/3 nights covers everything
  • Getting from Bangkok: Motorway M7 = 2.5h (147 km · ~110 THB toll) · vans/buses 110–250 THB
  • Getting around: Pattaya baht buses (sǒngthǎew) run a fixed loop on Beach Road and Sukhumvit — flat 10 THB/ride. Grab/Bolt work in both Pattaya and Bang Saen. Scooter rental 200–300 THB/day.

Practical Info for Foreign Visitors

Chonburi is the Thai beach destination most foreign visitors see first — here are the essentials:

1. Renting a car / scooter

  • Where: Bizcar and Thai Rent A Car have offices in Pattaya and at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi airport (drop-off in Pattaya available). At U-Tapao Pattaya airport, Budget and Avis have counters.
  • Daily rate: sedan 700–1,200 THB, scooter 200–300 THB
  • License: International Driving Permit (IDP) required for car rental and legally for scooter (police checkpoints common on the Sukhumvit-Pattaya stretch)
  • Insurance: always take CDW — scooter accidents on Pattaya streets are very common with tourists

2. Cash & ATMs

  • Pattaya is more card-friendly than Chiang Rai — many hotels and restaurants accept cards
  • But Ko Lan, Bang Saen beach vendors, and night markets are cash-only
  • ATM fee for foreign cards is 220 THB per transaction — withdraw bigger amounts (10,000+) less often
  • 7-Eleven counters often process top-ups and small payments more quickly than merchant banks

3. Pattaya baht buses

  • The cheapest way around Pattaya. Blue/red trucks with two benches, fixed loop on Beach Road and Sukhumvit
  • Flat fare 10 THB for the loop · just hop on at any stop
  • Knock on the cabin window when you want to get off, then pay the driver
  • Don’t hire one privately unless you’ve negotiated up front — drivers will often quote 200+ THB for a “private” trip you could do for 10 THB

4. Beach safety

  • Ko Lan currents can pull from certain beaches (Ta Waen at high tide). Watch the colored flags.
  • Pattaya jet-ski scams — operators occasionally claim damage and demand extra payment after rental. Photograph the jet ski before you ride and confirm price in writing.
  • Don’t swim if you’ve been drinking — Pattaya tap beer is stronger than tourists expect.

10 Must-See Attractions

1. Pattaya Beach + Beach Road

Pattaya Beach

A 4 km curved beach in the heart of Pattaya · beach chairs + umbrellas 50–100 THB/set · jet ski 1,500 THB / 30 min · banana boat 150 THB/person.

  • Location: Bang Lamung District, central Pattaya
  • Tip: The southern end (near Walking Street) gets crowded and the water isn’t as clean. The northern end and Wong Amat Beach further north are quieter and cleaner.
  • Sunset: 17:30–18:00, best viewed from the bay’s south end looking out

2. Ko Lan (Coral Island)

Ko Lan

Pattaya’s headline island — 7.5 km offshore, with white sand and water far cleaner than Pattaya Beach. Six beaches to choose from:

  • Ta Waen Beach — main, busiest, full restaurant + chair service
  • Tong Lang Beach — quieter, good snorkeling
  • Tien Beach — water-sports heavy
  • Sa Wan Beach — local crowd, quietest

Getting there: Bali Hai Pier in Pattaya · ferry 30 THB/way, 45 min, hourly 07:00–18:00 (schedules occasionally adjust — check at the pier counter) · speedboat 200 THB, 15 min

⚠️ Last ferry back is normally 18:00. Miss it and you’re stuck overnight (homestays on the island run 800–2,500 THB). Confirm the actual last ferry time at the Bali Hai counter on the day — schedules shift with season and weather.

3. Ko Sichang (Si Chang Island)

Ko Sichang

A historic island off Sriracha · former site of Phra Chudadhuj Royal Palace (King Rama V’s summer residence), now a museum · plus Asadang and Tham Phang beaches · vibe is slow, totally unlike Pattaya.

  • Getting there: Sriracha Pier (Sriracha District, 30 km from Pattaya). Ferry 50 THB, 45 min, hourly 07:00–18:00.
  • On the island: Rent a tuk-tuk for the day (200–300 THB) to circle the island. Homestays available 800–2,000 THB if you want to overnight.

  • Time needed: half a day
  • Tip: Arrive at 09:00 or 14:00 to avoid midday heat · cultural shows run twice daily

6. Khao Phra Tamnak Viewpoint

Khao Phra Tamnak Viewpoint

A hill between Pattaya and Jomtien with a 180° view of Pattaya Bay · also home to a 9-spired pagoda and a large Buddha image.

  • Entry: free
  • Best time: sunset (17:30) for Pattaya bay shots, or sunrise (06:30) for sea-of-light city shots

7. Bang Saen Beach + Khao Sam Muk

Bang Saen Beach

Bang Saen Beach = Bangkok’s locals’ beach (1.5h drive). Family vibe, prices 30–50% lower than Pattaya. Grilled prawns and squid by the beach are excellent.

Khao Sam Muk = a viewpoint hill above Bang Saen, with a Chinese shrine and a colony of wild monkeys (watch your bags). Sweeping views of the Bang Saen–Chonburi coastline.

  • Getting there: ~80 km from Bangkok · drive into Burapha University campus, past Khao Sam Muk
  • Tip: Weekdays are much quieter than weekends — by Saturday the parking lots fill up early.

8. Nong Mon Market

The classic souvenir-stop on the Bangkok–Pattaya highway. Famous for:

  • Khao Lam — sticky rice grilled in bamboo, 60–80 THB/tube · the iconic Chonburi snack

  • Khanom Jak — Thai sweets in jak-leaf wrappers, 30 THB each

  • Khanom Pia Luk Nai — old-recipe Chinese pastries

  • Goong Jom — fermented shrimp grilled, served with sticky rice

  • Location: Mueang Chonburi District, on Sukhumvit Road (BKK↔Pattaya direct)

  • Open: ~08:00–17:00 daily

9. HTMS Chakri Naruebet — Thailand’s Aircraft Carrier

HTMS Chakri Naruebet

Thailand’s only aircraft carrier, docked at Sattahip Naval Base · open as a museum on weekends and public holidays only (the rest of the time it’s an active naval vessel).

  • Location: Sattahip District, ~40 km from Pattaya
  • Entry: free
  • Open: Sat-Sun + holidays · 09:00–16:00 (verify with the Royal Thai Navy before going — closes when the ship deploys)

10. Khao Kheow Open Zoo

Thailand’s largest open zoo, 2,000 rai with 8,000+ animals · drive your car through the open animal sections.

  • Location: Sriracha District, 30 km from Pattaya / 90 km from Bangkok
  • Entry: Thai adult 250 THB / foreign 500 THB · prices as of May 2026 (check the zoo website — prices change often)
  • Open: 08:00–17:00 daily
  • Tip: Arrive at 09:00 — animals are most active early. Elephant/seal/monkey shows run on a rotating daily schedule.

🌙 Chonburi After Dark

Pattaya has the most active nightlife in eastern Thailand — options range from family-friendly to adult-only.

1. Pattaya Walking Street — every night

The adult entertainment district, 600 m of pedestrian-only street with bars, karaoke, clubs, and restaurants at every price point. Opens around 18:00, but the real crowds and atmosphere kick in after 21:00 through ~02:00.

⚠️ Not family-friendly after 21:00. Families with kids should walk Beach Road instead, between 18:00–20:00.

2. Pattaya Beach Road at night

The 4 km beachside road is fully lit, with seafront restaurants and bars open until midnight · safer and more relaxed than Walking Street · plenty of options for a sit-down dinner with sea views.

3. Sanctuary of Truth at sunset

The all-wood temple silhouetted against sunset sea is Pattaya’s iconic shot · last entry around 18:00 · arrive at 16:30–17:30 for golden hour before the evening cultural show.

4. Chaloem Phra Kiat 84 Phansa Bridge

The ~2.7 km coastal bridge along Chonburi · designed as a viewpoint with cafés and street food · sea views and sunset are exceptional · the bridge itself is open 24h though shops close ~22:00.

5. Bang Saen Beach Road at night

Less rowdy than Pattaya — more local. Grilled prawns and squid stalls open until ~22:00 · families walk comfortably here.

6. Chak Ngaeo Ancient Market

A retro Thai-Chinese market with old-school food, Chinese lanterns, and a 19th-century Chinese-immigrant village atmosphere · open Friday–Sunday, ~16:00–22:00.

  • Location: Sak Ngaeo Village, Tambon Huai Yai, Bang Lamung District · ~15 km southeast of central Pattaya · search Google Maps: “Chak Ngaeo Ancient Market” or coordinates 12.833, 100.965
  • Verify operating days before going — Friday closures occur in low season

7. Pattaya Dolphinarium — evening show

Dolphin/seal shows, four shows daily — 11:00 / 13:30 / 15:00 / 17:00 (the 17:00 show has the best atmosphere) · family-friendly · adult entry 600 THB · price and schedule as of May 2026 (verify Pattaya Dolphinarium’s Facebook before visiting — individual shows occasionally cancel).

Insider Tips

  1. Don’t book a Friday night in Pattaya — room rates jump 50–100% and the Bangkok–Pattaya road is jammed. Drive Saturday morning or Friday before 14:00 if you can.
  2. Ko Lan water is 10× cleaner than Pattaya Beach — if you’re only there one day, skip Pattaya Beach and go straight to Ko Lan. The 30-baht ferry pays for itself.
  3. Pattaya baht buses are 10 THB flat for the standard loop · don’t get talked into “private hire” at 200+ THB unless you’ve genuinely chartered it.
  4. Watch out for jet ski scams on Pattaya Beach — operators may claim damage after rental. Photograph the jet ski before riding and confirm price in writing.
  5. Pattaya ATM fees are 220 THB/transaction for foreign cards · withdraw 10,000+ THB at a time to amortize.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to visit Chonburi/Pattaya?
November–April is ideal: dry, calm seas, no monsoon. May–October has afternoon thunderstorms but is still very visitable — the east coast gets less monsoon than Phuket. Avoid extended-weekend Thai holidays for traffic and crowds.
Pattaya or Bang Saen — which is better?
Different audiences. Bang Saen is closer to Bangkok (1.5h), family-oriented and Thai-focused, with cheaper food. Pattaya is farther (2.5h) but has international nightlife plus Ko Lan. Day trip from Bangkok = Bang Saen. Overnight = Pattaya.
Can I visit Ko Lan as a day trip?
Yes, easily. Ferry from Bali Hai Pier in Pattaya — 45 minutes, 30 THB one way. Boats run roughly 07:00–18:00. Best plan: 09:00 ferry out, 16:00 ferry back = 5 hours on the island. Verify schedule before going.
How do I get to Ko Sichang?
Ferry from Sriracha Pier (Sriracha District, ~30 km from Pattaya / ~10 km from Chonburi town). 45 minutes, ~50 THB. Boats run hourly 07:00–18:00.
How long is the drive from Bangkok to Pattaya?
Motorway M7 takes 2.5 hours (147 km, toll ~110 THB). Old highway (Sukhumvit) takes 3 hours and gets congested Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. Vans run 200–250 THB; buses 110–250 THB.
Is Pattaya Walking Street family-friendly?
No — Walking Street is a 600-meter pedestrian-only adult entertainment district. It opens around 18:00 but the real crowds and adult atmosphere kick in after 21:00, peaking 21:00–02:00. Families with kids should walk Beach Road and the surrounding area in early evening (18:00–20:00) rather than enter Walking Street itself.
