Phichit (Thailand) is not on most travelers’ radars — many drive past it between Bangkok and Phitsanulok without stopping. But if you give Phichit 1–2 days, you find a province with 700-year-old history, Thailand’s third-largest natural lake, and a river-fish cuisine that locals will tell you is the real reason to stop here — three major rivers (Nan, Yom, Phichit) meeting in one province means fresh, firm fish ends up on every serious lunch table.

The flavor of Phichit is in the quiet — affordable, slow, and steeped in old stories: the Chalawan crocodile from the Thai literary classic Krai Thong, the home where Ho Chi Minh lived while resisting French colonial rule, and the ancient earthen city walls dating to the Sukhothai era.

Most international travelers reach Phichit Thailand as a 1-day stop on the Bangkok → Phitsanulok → Sukhothai route — but it works equally well as a 2-day standalone for travelers who like off-the-beaten-path destinations.

7 Things to See in Phichit

1. Bueng Si Fai — Thailand’s third-largest natural lake

Bueng Si Fai, Phichit

A 5,000-rai (800-hectare / ~1,980-acre) freshwater lake in the city center, Thailand’s third-largest after Songkhla Lagoon and Bueng Boraphet. The signature feature is the Chalawan statue, a giant crocodile sculpture from the Thai literary classic Krai Thong, plus lakeside cafés and a sunset walking path. Local heritage groups treat Bueng Si Fai as the icon of the city — guided “Phichit story walks” typically start and end here.

Plan 1.5–2 hours to walk around or sit at a waterfront café.

2. Wat Tha Luang — the city’s spiritual heart

An old temple in the town center, home to Luang Pho Phet, a revered Mara-conquering Buddha image in Chiang Saen style. The temple has been Phichit’s spiritual anchor for centuries.

It sits next to the Nan River, a 5-minute walk from the City Pillar Shrine.

3. Phichit Old City Park

Phichit Old City Park

Earthen city walls and moat dating back over 700 years to the Sukhothai-Ayutthaya period. The site is now a public park with paths, scattered pottery fragments, and the original wall lines still visible.

Located in Mueang Kao sub-district, Mueang Phichit District — about 7 km (~15 min drive) southwest of the modern town center.

4. Wat Pho Prathap Chang

Wat Pho Prathap Chang

A historic temple from the era of King Naresuan the Great. Legend says the king passed through and his elephant rested under the Bodhi tree here. The old ordination hall blends Lanna and Ayutthaya artistic styles.

In Pho Prathap Chang District, ~20 km from the town.

5. Old Wang Krot Market

Old Wang Krot Market

A 100-year-old riverside market with wooden Rama V-era buildings, local food, traditional sweets, and souvenirs. The market opens every Sunday evening (~16:00–21:00).

In Taphan Hin District, ~30 km (30 min drive) from town.

6. Ban Dong Ho Chi Minh House Museum

Ho Chi Minh House Museum

The house where Hồ Chí Minh, the Vietnamese leader, lived during 1928–1929 while exiled in Thailand and organizing resistance against French colonial rule. Today it is a small museum with biographical exhibits and historic photographs.

In Sam Ngam District, ~30 km from town. Open daily 08:30–16:30 · free entry (verify times before visiting).

7. Wat Khao Rup Chang

Wat Khao Rup Chang

A temple on a hill shaped like a crouching elephant, with Sukhothai-era archaeological remains and a viewpoint over Taphan Hin District. A short flight of steps gets you to the top.

In Taphan Hin District, ~5 km from Old Wang Krot Market — easy to combine.

Local Food

The defining feature of Phichit cuisine is fresh river fish from the three large rivers (Nan, Yom, Phichit) that converge in the province. The flesh is firm, sweet, and lacks the muddy aftertaste of pond-raised fish.

Must-try fish dishes:

  1. Tom yum pla ma (ต้มยำปลาม้า) — Spotted-fish tom yum with large, sweet chunks of firm fish. The dish locals will tell you to order first.
  2. Pla krai luak jim (ลวกจิ้มปลากราย) — Thick slabs of poached knife fish served with a punchy seafood dipping sauce.
  3. Tod man pla krai (ทอดมันปลากราย) — Pan-fried knife-fish cakes made from real fish meat, not the flour-heavy Bangkok version. Chewy and rich.

  1. Pla neua on tod krathiem (ปลาเนื้ออ่อนทอดกระเทียม) — Soft-fleshed river fish deep-fried until crisp outside, soft inside, finished with fragrant fried garlic.
  2. Pla thabthim phao (ปลาทับทิมเผา) — Whole grilled red tilapia, firm and clean-tasting.
  3. Choo chee pla neua on (ฉู่ฉี่ปลาเนื้ออ่อน) — A rich coconut-curry sauce poured over fried river fish.

Other Phichit specialties:

  • Bang Krathum dried banana — sun-dried bananas, the province’s signature souvenir
  • Taphan Hin moon cakes — old-recipe Chinese-style pastries from the Taphan Hin community
  • Tha Khoi pomelo (ส้มโอท่าข่อย) — Phichit’s famous local pomelo variety
  • Chalawan-city pomelo yum — local salad with Tha Khoi pomelo served in a fried-batter cup

How to find a good fish restaurant: the major river-fish restaurants line the main routes (Nakhon Sawan–Phitsanulok highway) and downtown roads. Ask a local or your hotel for the spot that’s open today — the names rotate, but the cuisine is constant.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I need in Phichit?
One day is enough for the city center (Bueng Si Fai + Wat Tha Luang + a river-fish lunch). Add a second day if you want to reach the Old City Park and Wat Pho Prathap Chang in the outlying districts.
Where is Phichit and how do I get there from Bangkok?
Phichit sits in upper Central Thailand, between Bangkok and Phitsanulok — about 340 km / 4–5 hours by car. Every Bangkok–Chiang Mai train stops at Phichit Station (~5–6 hours from Krung Thep Aphiwat). Bus fare is 350–450 THB.
What food is Phichit famous for?
River fish (ปลาแม่น้ำ). Three major rivers run through the province — Nan, Yom, and Phichit — and local kitchens are built around their fresh, firm-fleshed catch. Must-try dishes: spotted-fish tom yum (ต้มยำปลาม้า), knife-fish slices with seafood dipping sauce (ลวกจิ้มปลากราย), pan-fried knife-fish cakes (ทอดมันปลากราย), and soft-fleshed fish with garlic (ปลาเนื้ออ่อนทอดกระเทียม). Note: the famous "Mae La snakehead" (ปลาช่อนแม่ลา) is from Sing Buri province, not Phichit.
Is Bueng Si Fai really that big?
Yes — at ~5,000 rai (800 hectares / ~1,980 acres), it is Thailand's third-largest natural body of water, after Songkhla Lagoon and Bueng Boraphet. Sunset walks around the lake are particularly nice.
What is the Chalawan legend?
A Thai literary classic — Chalawan is a giant crocodile said to have lived in the Nan River around Phichit, and Krai Thong is the hero who hunted him. A statue of Chalawan at Bueng Si Fai is now the provincial symbol.
